Bassett Medical Center Unit: Inpatient Surgery (Med/Surg) Overview  Unit Size: 46 beds  Layout: The unit is large with a nurses' station located at both the front and back, facilitating communication and oversight across the two sides of the unit. Patient Demographics  Age & Gender: Varies widely; no specific demographic profile.  Common Conditions: o General post-operative patients o Frequent pain management needs o Chest tubes o NG tubes o Heparin drips o Dressing changes o JP drains o Traction Staffing and Support  Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: No more than 6:1, ensuring adequate attention to patient needs.  Staffing Model: Charge nurse oversees the unit and may have a smaller assignment to assist on the floor. Nursing assistants are scheduled but may float off the unit or provide support for confused patients as needed. Common Diagnoses Treated  Post-operative care  Urology  Neurology  Bariatric surgery  Plastic surgery  Orthopedic surgery  Mixed acute medical patients Procedures and Treatments  Frequent administration of pain medications  IV medications and drips  Wound vac management  Total parenteral nutrition (TPN)  Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)  Dressing changes  CBI (Continuous Bladder Irrigation) Technology and Equipment  Monitoring and Diagnostics: o MASIMO for non-invasive monitoring o Bedside monitoring systems o EKG machines o Bladder scanners  Patient Care Management Software: EPIC is utilized for patient care documentation and management. Certifications Required: BLS Documentation Requirements:  Q4h vital signs  Q8h intake and output  Pain assessments  Shift assessment  Full admission assessment for new patients to include an acceptance note with a 2 RN skin and belongings check documented. Additional Information for Agency Travelers  The environment is fast-paced with quick turnover of beds, requiring adaptability and efficient time management.  Be prepared for frequent medication administration and various treatment protocols.  Familiarity with the technology and procedures in the unit will be beneficial for new staff.
