Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Registered Nurse (RN)
The NICU RN is a highly skilled and compassionate nursing professional responsible for providing specialized care to premature and critically ill newborns. This role requires exceptional clinical judgment, emotional resilience, and the ability to respond rapidly to changes in infant condition. The RN collaborates closely with neonatologists, respiratory therapists, and the interdisciplinary team to deliver safe, developmentally appropriate, and family-centered care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Apply the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for neonates in the NICU
• Perform comprehensive newborn assessments, including vital signs, neurological status, respiratory function, and behavioral cues
• Monitor cardiac, respiratory, and oxygenation status using specialized NICU equipment
• Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and treatments as prescribed
• Provide thermoregulation, nutritional support (including gavage feedings), and respiratory support (including ventilators, CPAP, and oxygen therapy)
• Document assessments, interventions, and infant responses accurately in the electronic health record (EHR)
• Collaborate with healthcare providers to develop and adjust individualized care plans
• Educate parents and families on NICU equipment, newborn conditions, feeding plans, and discharge instructions
• Maintain adherence to infection control, safety, and neonatal quality standards
• Respond promptly to emergencies, including apnea, bradycardia, respiratory distress, and code situations
• Advocate for infants and uphold confidentiality and patient rights
Minimum Requirements
• Current Registered Nurse License in the state of practice
• Minimum one year of professional nursing experience; NICU experience strongly preferred
• Completion of Amergis' Competency Program (if applicable)
• Current BLS certification (NRP required)
• Proficiency in neonatal assessment, equipment, and monitoring
• TB screening and health clearance (as required)
• Compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations
• Successful completion of new hire orientation and NICU training
• Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations
• Strong communication skills and proficiency in English
• Basic computer literacy
• Must be at least 18 years of age
