Description
The Transplant Nurse provides perioperative care to patients receiving organs by means of transplant surgery. The Transplant Nurse is responsible for providing healthcare pre and post-surgery to living donor recipients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collects data pertinent to the patient’s and donor’s health status
- Analyzes the clinical assessment data to determine nursing diagnoses and patient needs
- Coordinates care delivery
- Assists in the patient’s preparation for surgery
- Assists physician during transplant surgery
- Assists living donor patients in their recovery from surgery
- Provides healthcare to the transplant or donor recipient patient during the transplantation process
- Monitors recipient closely after the procedure in the event of rejection
- Educates the families of patients on organ and/or bone marrow transplant or donor recipients
- Monitors the vital signs of patients after the transplant process
- Manages patient calendar daily for time management purposes; indicating specific testing, labs, and other clinical procedures
- Strategizes to promote optimal health and wellness in a safe environment
- Provides education and educational materials to patients’ regarding their care upon discharge to include reportable signs and symptoms and when to notify the MD
- Monitors patients’ progress, meeting with them and their families to provide further patient/family education as needed
- Attends transplant clinic to meet with patients for follow-up care
- Adheres to HIPAA Privacy laws and maintain confidentiality
- Performs clinical assessment of the surgical site and wound care as ordered
- Monitors the donor recipient for signs and symptoms of organ/bone marrow rejection
Minimum Requirements:
- Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of assignment
- Certified Clinical Transplant Nurse certification may be required by state/contract
- Three (3) years of surgical/pre & post op nursing experience preferred
- Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
- Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable
- Current CPR if applicable
- TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
- Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
- Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
- Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site
- Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements
- Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required
- Computer proficiency required
- Must be at least 18 years of age
