Position Overview
The Echo Tech is responsible for providing high-quality diagnostic echocardiographic procedures under the supervision of a Cardiologist. This role involves utilizing advanced ultrasound technology to evaluate cardiac structures and functions, which is crucial for diagnosing and treating cardiovascular conditions.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform transthoracic (TTE), transesophageal (TEE), and stress echocardiograms in accordance with established protocols, American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) guidelines, and physician orders.
- Operate ultrasound and diagnostic imaging equipment to acquire high-quality cardiac images, employing contrast agents when necessary.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, pathology, and sonographic principles to recognize normal and abnormal echocardiographic findings.
- Analyze echocardiographic data and prepare preliminary findings for the interpreting Cardiologist.
- Manage intravenous (IV) lines for contrast echocardiography when properly trained and credentialed.
- Collaborate effectively with Cardiologists and healthcare team members to ensure optimal patient care.
- Explain procedures to patients, ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the process.
- Review and assess images for clarity, accuracy, and diagnostic value.
- Maintain precise patient records and documentation in the PACS or EMR system.
- Perform equipment maintenance and quality control checks, reporting any malfunctions swiftly.
- Follow infection control, HIPAA, and patient safety protocols diligently.
- Engage in ongoing education and stay updated on new echocardiographic techniques.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and accreditation processes relating to echocardiography.
- Support the organization's mission, vision, and values through compliance with policies and procedures.
- Carry out additional related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program with a specialization in Cardiac Sonography.
Licenses/Certifications
- Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) through ARDMS or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through CCI.
- BLS certification.
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as an Echo Tech; preferred experience is 3 years.
- Experience with a range of echocardiographic techniques, particularly Stress and TEE, is preferred.
Physical Requirements
Essential physical and sensory functions required for this position include:
- The ability to hear various sounds, including patient alarms and verbal communication.
- Clear communication skills for effective interaction with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
- Visual acuity to observe patient conditions, read documentation, and identify colors for clinical purposes.
- Tactile perception for assessing physical characteristics such as temperature, size, and texture.
- Motor coordination for operating medical equipment and performing necessary procedures.
- Occasional physical activities including stooping, kneeling, or reaching, along with continuous walking and standing during the shift.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and to engage in frequent repositioning of patients or medical equipment.
Working Conditions
This position is primarily based in an indoor healthcare environment such as a hospital or clinic. While protected from outdoor conditions, the work setting may experience temperature variations. The role includes frequent exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials, necessitating adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
The healthcare environment can also be fast-paced, requiring the ability to respond to unpredictable situations, including emergencies, effectively.
