Job Description

The Registered Nurse is responsible for managing, organizing, and administering nursing care for patients of all ages under the supervision of a physician. Compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as organizational policies, is a condition of employment.

Essential Functions

• Assess patient needs, including physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual aspects, according to their age and development.
• Document and report all observed symptoms, reactions, and changes in patient conditions.
• Utilize the nursing process to guide and deliver patient care, developing, implementing, revising, and evaluating a formal plan of care.
• Administer medications while adhering to the "Five Rights of Medication Administration" protocol.
• Provide educational information to patients and their families that is suitable for their age and learning abilities.
• Create and maintain a comfortable and safe environment for patients, families, and visitors.
• Organize and prioritize daily assignments for optimal patient care delivery.
• Demonstrate annual competency in assigned areas of work.
• Maintain patient and employee confidentiality at all times.
• Comply with the organizational Code of Conduct.

For Charge Nurse Responsibilities

• Assign staff to care for patients based on patient needs and the skill levels of available staff.
• Coach staff in problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Identify performance improvement opportunities and participate in related teams.
• Recognize life-threatening patient complications and respond appropriately by initiating emergency procedures.
• Maintain positive working relationships with physicians, departments, and staff.

Physical Demands

The physical demands of this position require the ability to:

• Use hands to handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; and communicate effectively.
• Sit, stand, and walk regularly.
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
• Possess specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.

Work Environment

Employees may work near moving mechanical parts and be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The risk of electrical shock is present. Occasionally, employees may handle explosive, toxic, or caustic chemicals. The typical noise level in the work environment is moderate, and the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens is categorized as Classification I, as outlined in the Hepatitis B Vaccine Program Policy.

Required Education

• Bachelor's degree (B.S.N.), Associate's degree (A.D.N.), or Diploma from an accredited college of nursing.

Competencies/Certifications Required

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Nebraska.
• Current BLS certification.
• Current ACLS certification.
• Current NRP certification (for RNs assigned to the Obstetrics Department).
