Job Description

The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse to provide high-quality care to patients requiring monitoring and support. The unit serves a diverse patient population, including those with cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and complex medical-surgical conditions. As part of a Co-Care/Virtual Nursing Model, the PCU emphasizes teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure positive patient outcomes.

Patient Population

• 30% of patients have cardiac-related conditions (e.g., CHF, MI, post-procedure patients, cardiac arrhythmias).
• Respiratory patients, including COVID-19, FLU, COPD, and asthma exacerbations.
• Complicated medical-surgical patients requiring close monitoring.
• Overflow management for neuro and renal patients.

Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive nursing care and execute treatment plans.
• Perform assessments and monitor patient responses to treatments.
• Administer medications and manage IV therapy, including blood product administration.
• Utilize electronic charting systems (Epic) for documentation and communication.
• Provide education and support to patients and families regarding care plans and health management.
• Participate in team rounds and collaborate with interdisciplinary staff.
• Support the virtual nursing team in managing patient care remotely.

Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse license in Alaska (must have license in hand for immediate offer).
• 1 year of experience in PCU or similar specialty is required.
• Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS.
• Experience with patient ratios of 1:4 is preferred.
• Knowledge of respiratory management and cardiac monitoring.

Skills Required

• Ability to manage complex medical conditions and provide optimal nursing care.
• Proficiency in cardiac telemetry and interpretation of dysrhythmias.
• Experience with high-flow nasal cannula and BiPAP/CPAP management.
• Ability to provide tracheostomy care and manage central and peripheral IV lines.

Work Environment

The PCU is a stepdown unit from the ICU with 36 beds and a daily census of 36 patients. The nursing staff includes bedside RNs, virtual RNs, and CNAs, ensuring a collaborative and supportive environment for both patients and staff. The unit is equipped with advanced monitoring technology to facilitate patient care.

• Respiratory Services
• Phlebotomy
• Social Services
• Pharmacy
• Rapid Response Teams

Daily Responsibilities

• Conduct patient assessments and provide direct patient care.
• Monitor and respond to changes in patient status promptly.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and staff meetings.
• Maintain adherence to isolation precautions and infection control practices.
