Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse (NICU RN)

Overview

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse (NICU RN) provides specialized care to neonates in a Level III NICU, focusing on infants starting from 22 weeks gestation and above. This role includes managing various medical conditions such as respiratory distress, glucose management, and caring for neonates requiring surgical or cardiac interventions.

Key Responsibilities

• Patient Care: Provide comprehensive care to neonates, particularly those less than 24-28 weeks gestation, emphasizing management of respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and infectious diseases.
• Medication Administration: Utilize the Pyxis medication system to administer IV vasopressors, surfactants, and steroids safely and effectively.
• Documentation: Ensure accurate records using the EPIC documentation system.
• Communication: Implement the SBAR communication method to facilitate effective interactions with healthcare team members and family members.
• Special Procedures: Execute and oversee procedures such as arterial line management, central line care, and interventions for neonatal abstinence syndrome.
• Respiratory Management: Oversee and adjust ventilator settings including AC, PC, SIMV, CPAP, BIPAP, and PEEP as needed.

Required Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

Skills and Experience

• Experience in Level III and Level IV NICU settings.
• Competent in interpreting and managing cardiovascular dysrhythmias.
• Proficient in various gastrointestinal feeding methods and management of oral, nasogastric, and nasojejunal tubes.
• Expertise in infection control protocols and IV therapy, including managing umbilical artery and vein catheters.

Provider Support

Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including Nurse Practitioners (NP), interpretation services, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, respiratory therapy, social services, and unit staff.

Special Procedures and Unit Details

The NICU is equipped with all necessary equipment, supplies, and comprehensive patient care policies and procedures to support the care of neonates.

Shift Information

This position requires a night shift schedule of 3x12-hour shifts from 19:00 to 07:30.
