Description

Emergency Department RN (Contract Position)

Location

  • Milwaukee, WI

Facility Overview

  • Level IV Trauma Center
  • Level III NICU
  • Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center
  • Teaching hospital
  • Geriatric Accredited Center
  • 228 beds total
  • Emergency Department: 35 beds, including 6 fast track rooms
  • Approximately 168 patients seen per day

Job Details

  • Employment Type: Contractor
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 12-hour shifts, 1100-2300
  • Schedule: 3 shifts per week
  • Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend as needed
  • No on-call required
  • Holiday Coverage: 2 out of 4 major holidays or every other holiday

Experience & Skills Required

  • Minimum 3 years of Emergency Department experience in a fast-paced facility
  • Strong experience preferred for first-time travelers
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • IV skills
  • Basic knowledge of critical care drips and medication administration
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) experience (must have prior to start)
  • TPA administration
  • Blood administration
  • Procedural sedation
  • Code blue experience
  • Triage experience strongly preferred

Patient Population

  • Neonates through geriatrics
  • Wide range of ED diagnoses
  • Heavy mental health population
  • Trauma cases including gunshot wounds, stabbings, falls, motor vehicle collisions
  • Invasive neuro and STEMI patients stabilized and transferred as needed

Patient Ratios

  • Day & Night: 1 nurse to 4 patients (acuity based)
  • Fast Track: 1 nurse to 6 patients

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • NIHSS
  • TNCC

Unit Support

  • Unit secretary 24/7
  • ED Tech 24/7 (phlebotomy, blood glucose checks)
  • Charge nurse (may have lower acuity assignment occasionally)
  • Phlebotomy support during trauma and difficult sticks
  • Respiratory Therapist 24/7
  • ED Physicians and Mid-Level Providers 24/7
  • ED Educator
  • Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy
  • Security: Locked unit with home base in ED lobby
  • Central and bedside telemetry monitoring

Orientation

  • One 12-hour shift on unit

Charting System / Equipment

  • EPIC
  • Alaris infusion pumps
  • Pyxis medication dispensing system
