Job Opportunity: Labor & Delivery RN (Contract)

Location

  • West Allis, WI

Unit

  • Labor & Delivery (L&D) unit within House Supervisor department

Facility Overview

  • Level IV Trauma Center
  • Level III NICU
  • Level III Perinatal Center (L&D & Postpartum)
  • Primary Stroke Center
  • 277 hospital beds total
  • L&D Unit: 18 LDR beds, 3 triage rooms, 3 ORs for C-sections, 3 OB-ED rooms

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years RN experience preferred
  • First-time travelers accepted

Patient Population

  • Gestational age starting at 18 weeks
  • Intrapartum (labor, delivery, recovery)
  • Antepartum patients 22 weeks and greater
  • High-risk patients (e.g., preeclampsia, hyperemesis, diabetes)
  • Scheduled and unscheduled C-sections, cerclage placement/removal, tubal ligation
  • D&C procedures as needed for post-delivery bleeding control
  • No OB triage assignments for travelers

Patient Ratios

  • RN:
    • 1:1 for active labor, C-section, and recovery of mom/baby couplet after newborn stabilization
    • 1:2 for laboring patients
    • 1:2 for cervical ripening and early labor
    • 1:2-3 for stable antepartum patients
    • 2:1 care at delivery (1 RN for mom, 1 RN for baby until baby is stable)
  • OB Tech:
    • 2 during day shifts
    • 1 during night shifts

Required Certifications

  • RN: BLS, NRP, FHM
  • CST: BLS

Required Skills for RN

  • Delivery experience (must have)
  • Catching babies
  • Vaginal checks
  • Assisting laboring mothers
  • Recovery care for moms
  • Antepartum care
  • Intrapartum care (Labor, Delivery, Recovery of Room)
  • Immediate post-delivery newborn care including stabilization monitoring (vital signs, hypoglycemia, thermoregulation)
  • Management of non-obstetric co-morbidities (e.g., diabetes, hypertension)

Required Skills for OB Tech

  • Scrubbing C-sections
  • Assisting with deliveries
  • Transporting patients

Unit Support Staff

  • CNA support (ratio not specified)
  • Receptionist/HUC 24/7 (patient admission/registration)
  • Charge nurse (free floating, assists team as needed)
  • Phlebotomy available
  • IV/VAT team available
  • Resource nurse (OB/Triage nurse, no patient assignment)
  • Educator available during day shifts
  • Respiratory Therapist (RT)
  • OB Hospitalist 24/7 (additional support in triage)
  • Neonatologist 24/7
  • Anesthesiologist or CRNA on unit 24/7
  • Telemetry monitoring available

Technology/Equipment

  • EMR: EPIC
  • IV pumps: Alaris
  • Medication dispensing: Pyxis
  • Sapphire Epidural PCEA pumps
  • GE Fetal Monitors and GE Centricity Perinatal central monitoring

Floating Assignments

  • Travelers float first to:
    • Postpartum
    • NICU (hold and feed)
    • Medical-Surgical Unit floors as helping hands
  • No patient assignments when floating outside L&D
