Description
Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Facility Type: Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet Hospital
Unit: Digestive Disease Inpatient Units (21 beds, general medical/surgical)
- Patient population: Adults 17+ years, with some adolescent admissions possible for Bariatric Surgery and Autologous Islet Cell Transplant Programs
- Care includes complex GI diagnoses, Bariatric, Pancreobiliary, Hepatology, Surgical Oncology
- Nursing model: Modified modular nursing to enhance teamwork
Schedule & Work Details
- Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, nights (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
- Holiday rotation required
- Patient ratio: 1:6
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts every 4 weeks
- Floating: Required within scope to meet facility needs, may float between like units
- Guaranteed hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
- Block scheduling: Possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Local candidates accepted on a case-by-case basis within 60 miles radius
Experience & Licensing Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required
- License: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license required
- Certifications: BLS required (AHA or ARC accepted)
- First-time travelers accepted
Facility & Work Environment
- Charting system: EPIC
- Scrub color: Solid Royal Blue or White top with Royal Blue bottoms
- Parking: Permit required with a registration fee; additional fees may apply for parking outside designated garage
- Hurricane season (June-November): Employees and contractors may be assigned to emergency response teams; consider this before accepting assignments during peak months (August-September)
Required Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support): Required for all clinical staff
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Required for certain units (e.g., Adult Critical Care, Labor & Delivery, ER, ICU, Cath Lab, etc.) — check unit-specific requirements
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Required for pediatric units except Pediatric OR; preferred for Pediatric OR
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): Required if applicable
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course): Required as applicable; not required for ER RNs
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam: Required as applicable
- Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
- Competency Exams: Required; pediatric OR candidates may use regular OR competency exam if no pediatric experience
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., CHEMO for Oncology, NIH Stroke Certification for ER)
Background & Verification Requirements
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- Required searches include SSN trace, statewide, sex offender registry, national criminal, FACIS 3, and international searches if applicable
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholders if verification pending
- State-specific searches (e.g., South Carolina Medicaid Excluded Providers) required for sub vendors
- NURSYS verification required for all RNs and LPNs/LVNs
- Work history verification of last 3 clinical employers required
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Initial physical exam, updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
- Fit test for N95 mask (specific models) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
- Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form required
- Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start; if positive, additional documentation required
- Annual TB questionnaire required
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; low titers require boosters
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Drug screen: 10-panel urine drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
- Seasonal flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30); declinations not accepted
- COVID-19 vaccination not required but highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
Facility Specific Requirements
- Completion of orientation modules (OurDay platform) prior to start; estimated 2-6 hours depending on location
- Clear, passport-style badge photo required before start
- Upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into facility system
- Sterile Processing Techs have additional physical assessment and lab requirements
- Radiation badges required for certain specialties (e.g., CVOR, Cath Lab, Radiation Oncology)
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
- Complete employment application including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps
Contract Length
- 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Additional Notes
- Candidates with background hits or licensure issues may face delays or require facility approval
- Walk-through (temporary) licensure process available for SC RN license with faster turnaround if no background issues
- Travelers must comply with all facility policies and complete all required documentation before starting
- Emergency response assignments during hurricane season may affect scheduling and availability
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, teaching hospital environment with a focus on complex GI and surgical patient care. Candidates should be prepared for night shifts, weekend work, and floating as needed. Compliance with extensive credentialing, health, and competency requirements is mandatory.
