Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – Stroke/Neuro PCU

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Work on a Stroke/Neuro Progressive Care Unit (PCU) specializing in stroke and neurology patients.
  • Unit is a Joint Commission certified primary stroke center.
  • Telemetry PCU with hospitalist medicine patients.

Schedule & Shift Details

  • Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
  • Option for 4x12 hour shifts upon request
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Must work one holiday per 13-week contract (Christmas time off requests not approved)
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Return to Office (RTO) requests must be submitted with application

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
  • Neuro PCU experience required
  • Knowledge of isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, IMC, and stepdown units

Unit Details & Floating

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5; staffing goal 1:4
  • IV drips managed include: Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, Ketamine
  • Remote telemetry monitors remain on unit; tele-sitting used to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
  • Floating within skillset required

Licensing & Experience

  • Pending license accepted if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
  • Otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required
  • First-time travelers accepted, but travel experience preferred
  • Locals accepted (radius rule applies)

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • I9 or attestation required
  • Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing; must meet radius criteria
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Background check: 7-year history within 1 year of start, including education verification
  • Various certifications and competency exams as applicable
  • Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
  • Fit test within 1 year, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Drug screen (10 panel) within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations or positive titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination documentation or mask/declination form during flu season
  • 2 clinical references required
  • Complete employment application/resume
  • Skills checklist updated annually

  • Facility is a large acute care hospital with Level I Trauma Center designation and Magnet status
  • Teaching hospital affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
  • Advanced specialty care including bariatric, trauma, and surgical services
