Job Summary: OR Nurse - Surgical Services
Location: Not specified
Facility Type: Non-teaching hospital, Trauma Level 3
Unit: Operating Room (OR)
Unit Beds: 8 OR beds at main campus + 4 ORs at Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Requirements
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years clinical experience
- Minimum 2 years clinical experience in OR specialty
- Prior travel experience preferred
- Work history from similar size facility and trauma level II or higher preferred
Certifications:
- Required: State nursing license (NY), BLS
- Preferred: CNOR (certification through NBSTSA)
Skills:
- Circulating nurse required; scrub experience preferred
- Solid knowledge base in ortho, robotics, general surgery, ENT, plastics, neuro
- Vascular surgery experience is a must
Work Environment & Schedule
- Shift Hours: 07:00 - 19:30 (12-hour shifts)
- Scheduling: Smartsquare, no self-scheduling
- Rotation: Rotates days off with other 12-hour shift staff; rotation depends on cases and nurse experience
- Floating: Required to float to ASC as needed
- Call: 1 night per week on call; weekend on call once every 3rd to 4th weekend
- Holiday: On call for 1 holiday per year if not assigned; travelers must work 2 out of 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas/Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day/Eve)
- Orientation: 2 days, bi-weekly on Mondays
Patient Population & Care
- Patient Age Range: 6 months to 100+ years
- Patient Diagnoses: All surgeries except cardiac, transplants, neuro, and gastric bypass
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:1
- Ancillary Staff: OR aides, scrub techs, surgical assistants, RNs (approx. 30 staff per shift)
- Advanced Practice Providers: None on unit
Equipment & Protocols
- Documentation & Medication System: EPIC
- Respiratory & Anesthesia Support: Available 24/7
- Ventilator Management: Managed by respiratory therapists
- Unit Procedures: Start IVs, patient transports if central transport is backed up
- Dress Code:
- Scrubs provided
- Closed-toe, non-skid shoes required
- No jewelry while scrubbed in; earrings covered by hair covering
- Hair/beard covered with disposable caps
- No chipped nail polish or fake nails
Additional Notes
- Public transportation is not accessible; reliable personal or rental vehicle strongly recommended
- Vehicles should have all-season or snow tires November through April
- No block scheduling; work Monday through Sunday as scheduled
- Certified OR Techs may have float and call responsibilities, weekend shifts as needed (max 1 weekend per 4-week period)
- Employment gaps over 90 days must be explained
- Complete work history including bed count, EMR, and facility type required for submission
