Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Job - Indianapolis, Indiana
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse

- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Unit: Cardiovascular surgical, peripheral vascular surgical, arrhythmias, endocarditis, CHF exacerbation, and overflow as needed
- Staffing Ratios: 1:5-6
Job Requirements & Expectations
- Must be flexible with weekend shifts; expected to work 50% of weekends during the contract.
- Refusal to float to other units may result in contract termination.
- Floating may include Med-Surg, PCU, ICU levels of care with resources provided.
- Teaching facility: travel nurses may be required to precept or have students shadow them.
- Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status.
- Charge nurse responsibilities may be required with training and resources provided.
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required.
- Preferred skills: Telemetry and IV start.
- Locals are not accepted.
- Candidates must have an Indiana or Compact nursing license in hand or have submitted fingerprint application.
Certification Requirements
- BCLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (required for all candidates)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (verify per cost center)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted (verify per cost center)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA only
- CHEMO (Chemotherapy certification) - as required
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) - as required
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - per unit requirements
- NIH Stroke Certification - as required
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement including HIPAA compliance
- State License Verification (within 30 days before start)
- Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam
- Unit Competency Exam
- Color Blind Testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent, 100% minimum score)
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam completed within 12 months of start date
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start (specific approved respirators required)
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Rubeola (Measles): positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Mumps: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Rubella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
- Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted; history not accepted
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months (includes amphetamines, marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30 - 3/31); declinations not accepted
- TB Questionnaire updated annually
- Color Blind Exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score
Documentation & History
- Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment within 2 years; references must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above
- Current employment application with full work history; gaps of 30+ days must be explained
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and updated annually
- Application must cover 7 years of history with all gaps accounted for
Additional Notes
- IU Health University and Methodist Hospitals are teaching facilities.
- Effective 11/30/2024, Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at IU Health facilities except for Periop/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS).
- On-site PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) is available at Methodist and University Hospitals and is automatically approved.
- On-site fit testing is limited and only available as a last resort at certain campuses.
- Completion of mandatory RRT modules required for Respiratory Therapists (not applicable for RN).
- Compliance with facility-specific forms and orientation packets is required prior to start.
