ER RN Opportunity - Stevens Point, Wisconsin

Position Details

  • Specialty: ER Registered Nurse (ER RN)
  • Location: Stevens Point, WI
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Department: Emergency Room (ER)

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (AHA)
  • BLS (AHA)
  • PALS (AHA)
    Strongly preferred: TNCC, NRP, ENPC

Facility & Unit Information

  • 9 beds/trauma bays
  • Combined ED/Urgent Care facility (Urgent Care hours 8 AM - 8 PM)
  • No designated triage nurse; bedside triage performed by nurses
  • ED holds intermixed within the ER; transfers to ICU or critical care as needed
  • No separate psych/seclusion rooms
  • Security onsite Monday-Friday 8 AM - 4 PM; panic button linked to 911 for off-hours
  • Average patient volume: ~30 patients per day
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-4

  • Cardiac issues
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Tick bites
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Wounds (triage, treat, and transfer out; can take a full day)

Experience & Skills Required

  • Minimum 1 year in Critical Access Hospital (CAH) or similar setting if first-time traveler, or 2 years ED experience in a similar setting if no previous travel
  • Comfortable working with limited resources
  • Willingness to flex between inpatient Medical-Surgical (MS) and ER units
  • Ability to work in duo schedules (may split weekends between ER and MS)
  • Familiarity with common drips such as Heparin and Diltiazem

Staffing & Support

  • 1 ED provider available 24/7
  • Physician Assistant (PA) available Monday-Friday 8:30 AM - 5 PM
  • Charge RN takes assignments; typically 2 RNs in-house, 3 on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, with additional staffing as needed
  • 1 day-shift ED/HUC tech assists with patient sitting, labs, IVs, EKGs, and patient care
  • No Respiratory Therapist (RT) onsite; RNs responsible for RT duties including ABGs, breathing treatments, and EKGs
  • RNs assist with intubation and monitoring transport vents until transfer
  • RNs required to read their own cardiac monitor strips
  • X-ray and CT available 24/7; patients transport themselves
  • Ultrasound available Monday-Thursday
  • Labs drawn by RNs or techs; lab picks up samples from unit

Scheduling & Work Requirements

  • Shifts: 7 AM - 7 PM or 7 PM - 7 AM (block schedule)
  • Weekend requirement: Every 3rd weekend (Friday-Sunday)
  • Holiday requirement: Every 3rd major holiday, including major winter holidays
  • No regular on-call; may be placed on call if no inpatients are in-house (rotated)
  • Floating required between ER and inpatient MS unit (12 beds, average 1 patient)
  • Potential future assistance at new Wisconsin Rapids ER location if census is low

Orientation & Dress Code

  • One full shift unit-specific orientation plus mandatory paperwork and computer-based training (CBTs) during first two days
  • Scrub color: Any solid color

Additional Notes

  • Clinicians must clock in and out at the facility
  • Previous employment with the facility requires a minimum 6-month gap before reapplying

This position is ideal for ER nurses experienced in resource-limited settings who are flexible and willing to work both ER and inpatient MS units.
