Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Labor & Delivery)

Location: Arlington, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Schedule Details

  • Unit: Labor & Delivery (L&D)
  • Schedule: 7 PM to 7 AM (Nights), 3 shifts per week (12-hour shifts)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Patient Population: High-risk L&D with 16 labor rooms, 6 triage rooms, 6 antepartum rooms, and 3 ORs
  • Level 3 NICU on site
  • Teaching facility with resident coverage
  • Common patient conditions: Preeclampsia, Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (PPROM), multiples, fetal anomalies, cardiac defects in mother or baby
  • OR team handles scheduled C-sections and add-on cases during the day
  • 24/7 in-house anesthesia coverage
  • External cephalic versions performed during the day

Requirements

  • Active Virginia or Compact nursing license at time of submission
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Circulating skillset required
  • Minimum 1+ year of L&D nursing experience (higher experience requirement prevails; here it is 1+ year)
  • AWHONN Intermediate certification preferred but not required
  • First-time travelers accepted

Staffing & Work Environment

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2
  • Average daily census: 15 patients
  • Call: No call required
  • Scheduling: Self-scheduling
  • Medication management system: Omnicell
  • Documentation systems: EPIC and OBTV
  • Communication method: SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation)
  • Scrubs provided
  • EPIC training: Stork/OB module

Vaccination & Health Requirements

  • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31)
  • Medical or religious flu vaccine exemptions allowed but must comply with CMS guidelines and require documentation
  • Other health requirements include:
    • Pre-employment physical exam within 1 year
    • Fit mask test within last 12 months
    • Adult TDAP vaccine (required for Labor and Delivery unit)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Drug screening within 30 days of start
    • Immunity or vaccination proof for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
    • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Masking required if flu vaccine exemption is granted

Documentation & Compliance

  • Proof of I9 or attestation
  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Background checks including 7-year criminal check, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, education verification
  • References: 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
  • Skills checklist and competency exams as applicable
  • Various facility-specific documents and acknowledgements must be reviewed and signed prior to start (e.g., confidentiality, code of ethics, dress code, infection control, parking policies)
  • Vendor Access Request (VAR) and facility background check through HireRight required

  • No call required
  • First-time travelers accepted

  • EPIC training modules may require 5-8 hours to complete before start for some candidates
  • Facility is a teaching hospital with resident coverage and a high-risk patient population
