Job Summary: Emergency Department Registered Nurse (ED RN) - Contract

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience in the specialty

Prior Travel Experience

  • Not required (first-time travelers accepted)

Patient Population

  • Emergency patients ranging from neonates to geriatrics
  • Pediatric experience preferred (peds population ~1%)
  • Common cases: Chest pain, abdominal pain, stroke, neurological emergencies, trauma activations, cardiac STEMI, psychiatric patients (~2 per week)
  • Air transport of AMI patients

Patient Ratios

  • Nurse to patient ratio: 1:4 (day shift), 1:5 (night shift)
  • Tech to patient ratio: 1:10

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • De-escalation training not required

Key Skills and Responsibilities

  • Patient assessment and prioritization in emergency situations
  • Care coordination with physicians and healthcare team
  • Emergency response including medication administration, IVs, life-saving interventions
  • Triage and assisting with RSI/intubation, procedural sedation, restraints
  • Management of blood products including mass transfusion protocols
  • Experience with stroke/neuro alert criteria and trauma care
  • Cardiac STEMI care
  • Patient education and emotional support during crises
  • Accurate documentation in electronic medical records

Support and Resources on Unit

  • Tech support available (1:10 ratio)
  • Charge nurse with mostly full patient load
  • Phlebotomy assistance available
  • Respiratory therapy available 24/7
  • Hospitalist coverage 24/7
  • Midlevel providers available 10am-10pm
  • Bedside and nurse station telemonitoring

Orientation

  • 1 day hospital orientation
  • 1 day unit orientation

Scheduling

  • Weekend rotation every 3rd weekend
  • No on-call duties
  • Holiday work every other holiday
