Job Opportunity: ED Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Details

• Employment Type: Contractor
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift Start Times: 1500 and 1800

Facility Overview

• Level III Trauma Center
• Level III NICU
• Primary Stroke Center
• 72 beds total, 22 beds in ED
• COVID vaccine required

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of Emergency Room (ER) nursing experience
• Prior travel experience not required (first-time travelers accepted)

Patient Population

• Pediatric to Geriatric (mostly geriatric)
• General ED skillset required, including managing chest pain, abdominal pain, falls
• Pediatric experience preferred but not required

Patient Ratios

• ED RN: 1 nurse to 3-4 patients (both day and night shifts)

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)

Preferred Certifications

• CPI/MOAB (Crisis Prevention Intervention/Management of Aggressive Behavior)
• ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course)

Required Skills

• General ED nursing skills including:

  • Peripheral IV starts
  • Blood cultures with proper technique
  • Chest tube management
  • Code blue experience
  • Triage skills

Preferred Skills

• Arterial lines
• Critical care experience
• Central line placement
• Thoracentesis
• Charge nurse experience

Unit Support

• Charge nurse occasionally takes patients
• 2 CNAs share the unit
• 1 HUC (Health Unit Coordinator), 1 tech
• Paramedic available mid-shift only
• Phlebotomy support available for challenging/time-sensitive draws
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7
• Mid-level providers available 0800-2400
• Respiratory therapist coverage 24/7
• Telemetry monitoring at bedside and nurse’s station; tele tech only for ER holds
• Unit secretary available 24/7

Charting System / Equipment

• EPIC (required)
• Alaris infusion pumps
• Pyxis medication dispensing system
• Belmont rapid infuser (preferred for ED RN)

Orientation & Scheduling

• At least one shift orientation to learn unit flow
• Weekend rotation every other weekend
• Time off requests require 7 days’ notice; longer requests require nurse manager approval
• Low census on-call; travelers called off first
• Holiday shifts as needed based on staffing

This position is ideal for an experienced ED nurse with at least 2 years of ER experience looking for a 13-week contract in a Level III Trauma Center environment. Prior travel experience is not required.
