Description

Job Opportunity: Hospice Care Nurse (Contractor)

Specialty

  • Home-Hospice Care Operations

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience
  • First-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience not required)

Patient Population

  • Hospice patients/end of life (life expectancy 6 months or less if disease runs its normal course)
  • Common diagnoses: approximately 40% cancer, 60% other medical issues
  • Patients seen primarily in community settings such as:
    • Patient’s home or family member’s home
    • Assisted Living Facilities
    • Group Homes
    • Nursing Homes
    • Occasionally hospice patients in hospital settings

Caseload and Patient Ratios

  • Remote/Field: Caseload of 13-15 patients, with 5-6 visits per 8-hour shift
  • Inpatient Hospice: Patient ratio of 1:6-9 depending on shift

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • State nursing license

Required Skills and Competencies

  • IV skills
  • Chest tube maintenance / pleurex drain care
  • Catheter insertion
  • Tube feedings
  • Triage skills
  • Wound care and wound vac management
  • Comfortable managing PIV, midline, and central lines
  • Competency in end-of-life care including pain and symptom management (pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical)
  • Experience with opioids and opioid equianalgesic dosing
  • Documentation proficiency on EMR platforms
  • Independent critical thinker and problem solver, with good judgment on when to seek assistance
  • Flexibility to work in inpatient settings that may provide palliative sedation
