Job Opportunity: Surgical First or Second Assistant (RN Medical Center)

Position Details

Job Description

• Function as Surgical First or Second Assistant to the surgeon for complex and basic operative or invasive procedures.
• May perform responsibilities of a Surgical Technologist if required, but preferably not simultaneously while functioning as first assist.
• Must have knowledge and experience with XI Robots.
• Candidates should have a strong background in the surgical specialty they are being hired for (Neuro/ENT, Orthopedic, General, Vascular, etc.).
• Candidates should be familiar with specific procedures, especially for Vascular, Robots, and ENT.

Required Certifications

• RN: BLS
• ORT: BLS
• First Assist: BLS (must have first assist skills checklist, not general ORT skills checklist)

• Orthopedic
• General: Breasts/Plastics, Vascular, Laparoscopic, General Oncology, Genitourinary (GU), Gynecology (GYN), Robots

Work Environment & Support

• Level III Trauma Center with Level III NICU and Magnet Designation
• Patient ratio: 1:1
• Charting Systems: EPIC, Alaris, Pyxis
• Cross-trained to all Main OR specialties and Urology center (no floating to other hospitals)
• Support available from Charge Nurse, Leads, and Supervisors

Orientation & Scheduling

• Orientation: 1 to 1.5 weeks (depending on team and shift)
• Variable start times for day shift (between 5:30 AM and 7:00 AM)
• Weekend rotation: None
• On-call: 30-minute response time

  • General/Neuro: 8-week call schedule, Monday through Friday EOS call slots, 1-2 weekends
  • Orthopedic Surgical Assistants: 1 day call Monday–Thursday, 1 call weekend every 5 weeks

• Holiday expectations: Options for 4 10-hour shifts or normal hours with unpaid holiday time off
• Scrub color: Surgical scrubs provided; scrub caps allowed but must be covered by surgical bouffant
• Parking: Free parking available (detached lot for days, attached lot for evenings)
• Food: Starbucks and cafeteria available on campus
• No call rooms available

This position is best suited for candidates with solid surgical assistant experience and familiarity with robotic surgery systems, who are comfortable with a structured on-call schedule and variable shift start times.
