Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU) - Roanoke, Virginia
Position Overview
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN) – General Medicine PCU (Progressive Care Unit)
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
- Unit: Hybrid PCU with 10 PCU beds and 2 ICU beds, including ventilator/trach-dependent patients
- Patient Ratios: Typically 1:5
- Common Diagnoses: DKA, COPD, Sepsis, Suicide/Overdose, Chronic respiratory failure, renal failure
- Floating: Required within skillset
Experience Requirements
- Years of Specialty Experience: Not explicitly stated; assume standard RN experience for PCU level care
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation/management
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
- Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
- Ventilator care for chronic trach and vent patients
- Rapid Response and Code team activation
- Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units
- EPIC charting experience required
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- Weekend shifts: May be every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Holiday: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Call-off policy: Facility allows 1 call-off shift per 2 weeks
Licensure
- Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
Additional Requirements
- Must provide I-9 or attestation
- Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing (address must be within 100 miles of facility)
- Background check: 7-year history required within 1 year of start
- E-Verify and other federal background checks required
- Education verification and transcript/diploma required
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, free from communicable diseases
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel within 30 days of start
- Immunizations: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella (positive titer or vaccination)
- Flu vaccination or mask/declination form during flu season
- 2 clinical references required
- Skills checklist updated annually
Unit Highlights
- Care for ventilator and trach-dependent patients, including chronic trach care
- Remote telemetry monitoring on unit
- Tele-sitting implemented to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
This position is ideal for RNs with PCU or progressive care experience who are comfortable managing ventilator-dependent patients and working night shifts in a fast-paced acute care setting. First-time travel nurses are welcome.
