Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU - Cardiac Observation)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) focused on cardiac observation
  • Patient Population: Adult and geriatric patients, including chest pain management, post-cardiac catheterization, and overflow from cardiology and medicine PCU
  • High turnover environment with remote telemetry and tele-sitting
  • Floating within skillset required

Schedule

  • Shifts: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Call-off Policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association only)
  • BLS (American Heart Association only)
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Other certifications may apply depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation, and activation of Rapid Response/Code teams
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Administration and management of cardiac drips (e.g., Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix – no titration)
  • Respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen delivery, and non-invasive airway management

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU/Cardiac Observation)
  • Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; assume minimum 1+ year experience in specialty (default to higher if conflicting info found)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted

Licensure

  • Active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required
  • Pending license accepted only if candidate holds a single-state license from a non-compact state

Documentation and Compliance Requirements

  • I-9 or attestation
  • Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility
  • E-Verify or attestation
  • Background check (7 years, including all locations lived/worked in past 7 years)
  • Education verification (highest earned degree) and transcript/diploma
  • Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
  • Fit test within 1 year, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Drug screening (10-panel) within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations or titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • Flu vaccination or declination form during flu season
  • References: 2 clinical references required
  • Skills checklist updated annually
  • Competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency as applicable
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment (HIPAA compliance)

Additional Notes

  • Ratio goal: 4:1, but may work at 5:1 ratio
  • Remote telemetry monitors on unit with tele-sitting implemented
  • Locals accepted under radius rule
  • Must work per facility call-off and holiday policies
  • Candidate must complete all required facility-specific documents and compliance forms prior to start

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center with Magnet designation and advanced specialty care in a teaching hospital environment.
