Job Opportunity: Med Surg Nurse (IU 4 Center)

Facility Overview

• Level IV Trauma Center
• Level III NICU
• Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center
• Teaching hospital
• 228 beds total, 32 beds on this unit
• COVID vaccine required

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 1 year of experience in Med Surg
• First-time travelers are welcome (no prior travel experience required)

Patient Population

• Surgical patients (mostly bariatric, bladder, orthopedic including total knees and hips)
• Also care for diabetics, kidney and liver failure, cardiac, stroke, and respiratory patients

Patient Ratios

• Day shift: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients
• Night shift: 1 nurse to 5-7 patients

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS

Required Skills

• Medical-Surgical Unit (MSU) skillsets
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Experience with post-op patients, wound care, chest tubes
• Medication drips: cardiac, heparin, insulin

Unit Support

• Receptionist 24/7
• CNA ratio: 1:6-8 (days), 1:8-10 (nights)
• Charge nurse with partial assignment
• Phlebotomy (peripheral draws)
• Respiratory Therapist 24/7
• Hospitalist 24/7
• Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy available during the week

Charting System / Equipment

• EPIC electronic health record
• Alaris infusion pumps
• Pyxis medication dispensing system
• Centralized telemetry monitored by tele tech

Floating

• Floating to other MSUs is expected; travelers float first

Orientation

• 1 day orientation on the unit

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation every other weekend
• Up to 2 weeks time off can be approved
• No on-call required
• Holiday work expectations: 1 summer holiday and 1 winter holiday
