Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU - Medical-Renal)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift & Scheduling Details
- Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
- Option for 4x12 hour shifts upon request
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Accepts first-time travelers and local candidates within radius
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac: Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, cardiac drip management (without titration)
- IV/Line: IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
- Respiratory: Oxygen administration via nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management
- Rapid Response/Isolation: Use of rapid response and code teams, maintaining isolation precautions
- Experience in PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown settings
Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
- Patient population: Adults and geriatrics, including chronic vent patients
- Specialty care: Hospitalist Medicine patients with renal and other medical diagnoses
- Unit also serves gastrointestinal, pulmonary, and other surgical/procedural patients
- Floating within skillset required
Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU/Medical-Renal)
- Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; assume minimum 1+ years in specialty or higher based on clinical skills and unit requirements
- Prior travel experience: Not required (accepts first-time travelers)
Licensing & Documentation Requirements
- Active Virginia RN or Compact license required (pending license accepted under specific conditions)
- I-9 or attestation required
- Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required
- Background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG required
- Education verification and transcript/diploma required
- Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Drug screening (10 panel) within 30 days of start
- Immunizations or titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella required
- Flu vaccination or declination form required during flu season
- 2 clinical references required
- Skills checklist updated annually
Charting System
- Epic experience required

- Must complete facility-specific orientation and compliance paperwork prior to start
- Candidate must review and acknowledge safety and orientation manuals
- Floating within skillset expected
- Must work at least one holiday during the contract period
