Description

Travel Registered Nurse (RN) – General Medicine PCU

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with ventilator experience. The unit is a hybrid PCU/ICU setting caring for vent/trach-dependent patients with common diagnoses including DKA, COPD, sepsis, overdose, chronic respiratory failure, and renal failure.


Schedule

  • 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (nights: 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Floating within skillset required

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (AHA only)
  • BLS (AHA only)
  • NIH Stroke Certification

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management, ventilator care (including chronic trach and vent patients)
  • Rapid Response and Code team activation
  • Isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units

Unit Details

  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5
  • Hybrid unit with 10 PCU beds and 2 ICU beds
  • Remote telemetry monitors remain on unit; tele-sitting used to increase Patient Care Tech coverage

Required Licenses

  • Active Virginia State RN license or Compact RN license required
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (General Medicine PCU)
  • Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; assume minimum 1+ year RN experience with ventilator care preferred
  • Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted

Additional Requirements

  • EPIC charting experience required
  • Background check (7 years) and education verification required
  • Physical exam within 1 year, including communicable disease clearance
  • Fit testing within 1 year, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Drug screening (10-panel) within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations or titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella required
  • 2 clinical references required
  • Complete application/resume and skills checklist updated annually

Notes

  • Locals accepted within radius rule
  • Facility allows call off of 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)
  • Must comply with facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center and Magnet-designated hospital with advanced specialty care.
