Description

Travel Registered Nurse (RN) – Neuro PCU

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) specializing in neurological patients
  • Shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:45 AM – 7:15 PM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
  • Patient Population: Adult neurological patients including neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, epilepsy monitoring, and neuro-specific diagnoses
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4–5 (travelers must be comfortable with up to 1:5)
  • Floating: Required to float to units within clinical skillset

Required Qualifications

Licensure

  • Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state

Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration, cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
  • Rapid Response and isolation precautions

Experience

  • Accepts first-time travelers (no prior travel experience required)

Scheduling and Documentation Requirements

  • Charting experience with EPIC required
  • All requests for time off must be submitted with application
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Various background checks and verifications required, including:
    • 7-year background check
    • Education verification (highest earned degree)
    • State license primary source verification and NURSYS verification
    • Drug screening (negative 10-panel within 30 days of start)
    • Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
    • Fit testing within 1 year, updated annually
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
    • Immunizations or positive titers for measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, varicella
  • Required to complete facility-specific compliance and orientation paperwork prior to start

Additional Information

  • Locals accepted with radius rule applied
  • Must provide valid Driver’s License/State ID within 48 hours of signing
  • Two clinical references required
  • Complete application/resume required
  • Skills checklist updated annually
