Job Description

• Float to different Medical-Surgical (MS) units throughout the hospital, including:

  • MS 1 General Surgical (18 beds)
  • MS 2 Cardiac Neuro (18 beds)
  • MS 3 Oncology (18 beds)
  • MS 4 Ortho (16 beds)
  • 3W Cardiac Tele (16 beds)
  • Surgical Surge Unit (14 beds)
  • ED Holding
• Provide care within RN scope; when floating to ICUs, assist as helping hands, taskers, or runners without patient assignments or medication administration.
• Patient types vary by unit and include general medical, surgical, cardiac, neuro, oncology, ortho, and post-surgical patients.
• Telemetry experience is required.

Patient Ratios

• Day shift: 1 RN to 5 patients
• Night shift: 1 RN to 6 patients

Required Certifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• NIH Stroke Scale certification

Required Experience

• Minimum 1 year of nursing experience in a relevant setting
• Telemetry experience required
• First-time travelers are welcome (no prior travel experience required)

Skills and Responsibilities

• General medical-surgical nursing skills
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Drain management (JP drain, hemovac)
• Nasogastric tube (NGT) placement and management
• Central line management (PICC)
• Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
• Dressing changes, wound care, wound vac management
• Ability to float to various units and provide care within scope

Support and Resources

• Charge Nurse support (Day: 1:2, Night: 1:4-5)
• Unit Secretary (0700-1900)
• Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
• Hospitalist available 24/7
• Phlebotomy support for peripheral draws; RN responsible for central line draws
• Centralized telemetry monitoring with tele tech

Charting and Equipment

• EPIC (preferred)
• Alaris infusion pumps
• Pyxis medication dispensing system

Scheduling

• 12-hour night shifts: 1900-0730
• Weekend rotation every other weekend
• 6-week schedule provided 1-2 weeks in advance
• Holiday work every other holiday based on start date
• No on-call required
