Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (ICU)

Location: Chesapeake, Virginia


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse with strong neuro ICU experience for a travel contract position. The role involves caring for critically ill patients including neurosurgical, post-stroke, respiratory failure, renal failure, trauma, sepsis, MODS, and cardiac patients. Floating to Stepdown Unit, ED, and MedSurg may be required.


Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Schedule

  • 3x12 or 4x12 hour shifts (nights, weekdays, every other weekend, float, holidays)
  • Overtime billed after 48 hours on 4x12 schedule

Required Experience

  • Strong neuro ICU experience required (post-neurosurgical, EVD, stroke care)
  • 3 years critical care experience preferred (strong candidates without 3 years will be considered)
  • Travel experience preferred (prior travel experience NOT explicitly required)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Strong experience with External Ventricular Drain (EVD) management
  • Proficient in ventilator management, IV drip titration, telemetry monitoring, and conscious sedation
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Additional Requirements

  • No license or background issues allowed (zero tolerance policy)
  • Must reside more than 50 miles from facility (local rule)
  • Valid driver’s license required for address verification
  • Pass/Fail EKG/Medication competency testing required at orientation (80% minimum, one attempt only)
  • Physical exam, immunizations, and health screenings current and compliant (including TB, Hepatitis B, MMR, Varicella, Tdap)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months
  • Fit test for N95 mask required (no PAPR allowed)
  • Fingerprinting required within first week of contract start (per Virginia state regulations effective 1/1/2026)
  • Various background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
  • Documentation including photo for badge, job description acknowledgment, and safety manual acknowledgment required

Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (AHA)
  • ACLS (AHA)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (must be current within 1 year and renewed annually)
  • Pass/Fail EKG/Medication test at orientation
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) preferred but not required

Notes

  • Candidates must be prepared to float between units as needed
  • Strong neuro ICU skills are critical for this role
  • Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory
  • Facility enforces strict compliance with licensure, background, and health requirements
