Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (ICU) - Chesapeake, Virginia

Job Overview

  • Location: Chesapeake, VA (near Virginia Beach and Norfolk)
  • Specialty: Registered Nurse, ICU
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 3x12 or 4x12 hour shifts (nights, weekdays, every other weekend, float, holidays)
  • Overtime: Paid after 48 hours on 4x12 shifts
  • Patient Populations: Neurosurgical and post-stroke, respiratory failure, renal failure, post-surgical, trauma, sepsis and MODS, heart failure, post-cardiac cath

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 3 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Stepdown unit experience
  • Experience working with Level 1 and Level 2 Trauma patients
  • Certifications:
    • BLS issued by American Heart Association
    • ACLS issued by American Heart Association
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Clinical skills and experience in:
    • Ventilator management
    • IV drip titration
    • Telemetry monitoring
    • Conscious sedation
    • Dysrhythmia recognition and management
    • Emergency management
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system
  • Must be willing to float to Stepdown Unit, ED, and MedSurg to care for ICU patients being held
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2-3

Prior Travel Experience

  • Travel experience preferred but not required

Additional Requirements

  • No license or background issues allowed (zero tolerance policy)
  • Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility (local candidates within 50 miles will not be accepted)
  • Valid driver’s license required for address verification before offer acceptance

Compliance and Documentation

  • Background checks: 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG checks required and must be updated annually
  • Fingerprinting: Virginia VSP National Criminal Background Check Fingerprint Results required within first week of contract start (effective 1/1/2026)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (annual TB testing required)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Immunizations and Titers (within 10 years or as specified):
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (required for some units, preferred for others)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
  • Flu vaccination required annually (or approved exemption with mask requirement)
  • COVID vaccine preferred but not required; documentation collected if available
  • Pass/fail competency testing (EKG/medication) required for all RNs (80% minimum score, one attempt only)
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required as applicable
  • Color blindness testing required (100% passing score)
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment and job description acknowledgment required

Other Notes

  • Candidates must submit proof of 2 references and complete employment application/resume
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required and must be updated annually
  • Performance evaluation required if previously worked with the facility for 1 year or more
  • Passport-style photo required for badge issuance before start date

This position is ideal for experienced ICU RNs with strong neurological critical care skills who are comfortable working varied shifts and floating between units. Compliance with strict background and licensing requirements is mandatory.
