Job Opportunity: Director of Nursing (DON) - Leadership (Temp)

Location: St Ignace, Michigan
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a hands-on, dynamic Director of Nursing to oversee nursing services in a long-term care facility. The role focuses on ensuring safe, effective, and compassionate resident care with minimal time spent in meetings or administrative tasks. The DON will work closely with residents, families, and staff, providing leadership, mentorship, and direct care as needed.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Resident Care

  • Oversee all nursing services to ensure quality resident care
  • Ensure proper assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation
  • Monitor resident outcomes and address quality-of-care concerns
  • Collaborate with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals

Leadership & Staff Management

  • Supervise and support nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs, nurse managers)
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate nursing staff
  • Promote teamwork, professionalism, and a positive work environment
  • Address staff performance issues and conduct disciplinary actions as needed

Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., CMS)
  • Prepare for and participate in surveys, inspections, and audits
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures consistent with regulations
  • Lead quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives

Administrative & Operational Duties

  • Develop and manage nursing department budgets
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and efficient use of resources
  • Maintain accurate and timely nursing documentation
  • Participate in facility leadership meetings and strategic planning

Education & Staff Development

  • Ensure ongoing education, training, and competency evaluations for nursing staff
  • Stay current with best practices in long-term care nursing
  • Promote infection control, safety, and risk management programs

Required Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years of nursing experience
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred
  • CPR certification required
  • Infection Control certification required
  • Prior leadership or management experience in long-term care preferred

Additional Information

  • Prior experience as a Director of Nursing preferred; Nurse Manager or Assistant Director of Nursing experience considered for advancement
  • Role emphasizes direct interaction with residents and staff rather than administrative office time
  • Facility serves long-term stay residents only, with no frequent admissions or discharges
  • Leadership team is stable with a passion for quality care and staff development
