Registered Nurse - PCU (Pulmonary/GI)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Charting System: Epic experience required
- Floating: Required to float within skillset
- Patient Population: Adults and geriatrics in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with Pulmonary/GI focus
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5
- Unit Details: No ventilators on unit; may work without CNA support
Required Certifications and Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) certification
- Experience interpreting and managing dysrhythmias
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Required Clinical Skills
- Experience in PCU, DOU, IMC, or stepdown settings
- Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, and dysrhythmia interpretation/management
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
- Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, and non-invasive airway management
- Use of rapid response/code teams and isolation precautions
License Requirements
- Active Virginia State RN license or Compact RN license required
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
Additional Requirements
- Must provide I-9 or attestation
- Valid Driver’s License or State ID required within 48 hours of signing (address must meet radius criteria)
- Background check covering 7 years of history required within 1 year of start
- Education verification of highest earned degree required
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Drug screening (10 panel) within 30 days of start
- Required immunizations or positive titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Flu vaccination or signed declination form required during flu season
- Two clinical references required
- Completion of skills checklist annually
Notes
- First-time travelers are accepted
- Locals accepted within specified radius
- Call-off policy allows 1 shift off per 2 weeks
- All requests for time off must be submitted with application
This position is ideal for experienced Registered Nurses with PCU or stepdown experience who are comfortable working night shifts and managing adult and geriatric patients with pulmonary and gastrointestinal needs.
