Description

Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - MS/Tele

Location: Chesapeake, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (with possible extension)


Job Description

  • Unit: 5 East - Oncology/MedSurg/Tele & Vascular Access
  • Shift: Nights, weekdays, every other weekend (EOW), float, and holidays within contract
  • Schedule Options: 3x12 or 4x12 shifts (overtime after 48 hours)
  • Patient Ratios: 1:7
  • Facility cannot accommodate blocked schedule requests on this unit
  • Must be proficient in EPIC (no exceptions)
  • Required Skills: IV start, telemetry interpretation

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (AHA only)
  • ACLS as applicable
  • Pass/Fail EKG/Medication testing required at orientation (80% minimum score, one attempt only)
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
  • Primary source verification of state license
  • NIH Stroke Certification (for ICU, ER, MS/Tele, Stepdown units)
  • Other certifications as applicable per unit

Background & Screening Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Must run all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Zero tolerance for any background hits; any hit results in cancellation
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Fingerprinting required starting 1/1/2026 (Virginia VSP National Criminal Background Check)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Fit test for any N95 mask within 1 year of start (no PAPR allowed)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within past 10 years (required for certain units)
  • Negative TB test (PPD, QGold, or Tspot) within 1 year of start; chest x-ray if history of positive TB
  • Required titers within 10 years for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (or declination)
    • Varicella (or declination, depending on unit)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (or approved exemption with mask requirement)
  • COVID vaccine preferred but not required; documentation collected if available

  • Proof of 2 professional references

  • Passport-style photo for badge (shoulders up, front facing, plain background)
  • Various facility-specific acknowledgements and forms required within specified timeframes

Important Notes

  • Facility will not consider any candidate with license or background hits
  • Candidates must be able to pass all required screenings and certifications before start
  • No blocked schedules allowed on this unit
  • Candidates must be comfortable with patient ratios of 1:7
  • Prior travel experience preferred but not mandatory

This position offers an opportunity to work in a coastal Virginia location with access to outdoor activities and waterways. The role requires strong clinical skills in oncology, med-surg, telemetry, and vascular access nursing within a fast-paced environment.
