Description

Registered Nurse - ICU/PCU Float

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Float between ICU and PCU units; must be comfortable working in all ICU and PCU areas.
  • Shift: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM).
  • Floating may occur 2-3 times per shift (every 4 hours).
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
  • Holiday requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Local candidates accepted within a specified radius.
  • Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia RN license required.

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Clinical Skills

  • IV therapy: arterial line management, central/PICC line care, blood product administration, IV initiation & maintenance.
  • Respiratory support: BiPAP & CPAP management, ventilated patient care.
  • Medication administration: continuous IV sedation, emergency meds, titration of cardiac & vasoactive drips.
  • Wound care: surgical wounds with drains or wound vacs.
  • Cardiac monitoring: dysrhythmia interpretation & management.
  • Endocrine/metabolic: IV insulin protocol adherence.
  • ICU experience required.
  • Experience at a large Level 1 or Level 2 facility required.
  • Preferred: 2+ years of nursing experience.

Unit Details

  • PCU average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
  • ICU average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia.
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU).
  • Current ACLS and BLS certifications issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIHSS certification.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience in an acute care setting.
  • Experience at a large Level 1 or Level 2 facility.
  • Proficient IV therapy skills including arterial line management, central/PICC line care, blood product administration, IV initiation and maintenance.
  • Skilled in respiratory support including BiPAP and CPAP management and ventilated patient care.
  • Knowledgeable in endocrine/metabolic protocols, specifically IV insulin protocol adherence.
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Additional Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
  • Drug screening (10-panel) within 30 days of start.
  • Fit testing for masks within 1 year, updated annually.
  • Background check covering 7 years of history.
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma required.
  • Two clinical references required.
  • Completion of required competencies and orientation materials.
  • Compliance with facility-specific documentation and policies.

Notes

  • Call-off policy allows 1 shift off per 2 weeks.
  • Charting experience with EPIC required.
  • Must work at least one holiday during the contract.
  • Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted.

This position is ideal for experienced ICU/PCU RNs comfortable with floating and working in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
