Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Charting System: EPIC experience required
- Patient Ratio: 1:4–5 (must be comfortable with up to 1:5)
- Patient Population: Adult neurological patients, including neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, neuro-specific diagnoses, and medical overflow
- Unit Features: Includes 5 beds for continuous 24-hour epilepsy monitoring
- Floating: Required to float to units within clinical skillset
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
- Medication administration, cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
- Rapid Response and isolation precautions
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of Neuro PCU - Progressive Care Unit experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- EPIC charting experience
- Comfortable working night shifts and with specified patient ratios
- Accepts first-time travel nurses
Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU
- Minimum years of experience: 1 year Neuro PCU experience within the last year
- Prior travel experience: Not required
Additional Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year, free from communicable diseases
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Required background checks including 7-year history
- Education verification of highest earned degree
- Two clinical references required
- Completion of skills checklist annually
- Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
Scheduling and Policies
- Requests for time off must be submitted with application
- Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Locals accepted within radius rules
- Must comply with facility’s call-off and holiday policies
This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized neurological progressive care unit with a focus on adult neuro patients, including stroke and neurosurgical recovery, in a Level I Trauma Center environment. The role requires strong clinical skills in cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, medication administration, and respiratory support, with EPIC charting experience. Night shift availability and flexibility for weekend and holiday coverage are essential.
