Description
Registered Nurse – Cardio Thoracic Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Cardio Thoracic
- Beds: 70
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6
- Patient Types: MI, CHF, A fib, COPD, pacemaker/AICD placement, lung surgeries (including chest tubes, esophagectomy not fresh from PACU), general medical overflow
Shift Details
- Shift Length: 12 hours
- Shift Times:
- Days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- Nights: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Days: Saturday/Sunday
- Nights: Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday
- Holiday Requirement: Rotating schedule
- Days: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day
- Nights: Memorial Day Eve, July 3rd, Labor Day Eve, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve
- Call/Standby: None at this time
- Floating: Required to float to other general medical units
Required Certifications & Skills
- Licensure: Active Illinois RN license or application in process
- Certifications: BLS required; ACLS recommended
- Skills:
- EKG interpretation
- Medication titration (including Cardizem and heparin drips)
- Basic nursing skills
- RN Responsibilities:
- Titrate drips as needed
- Read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
Team & Support Staff
- Charge Nurse: 24/7 coverage, rarely takes patient assignments
- House Supervisor: 24/7 coverage
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs):
- Days: 1:8-9
- Evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
- CPAP, BiPAP (if part of patient’s home regimen)
- Heated high flow oxygen in special COVID cases
- RNs troubleshoot but do not manage vents
Orientation & Other Notes
- Orientation: Typically 1 shift or part of a shift, depending on prior experience at the facility
- Dress Code: Any scrub color allowed except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
- Drug Screen: Negative drug screen required
- Local Placements: Accepts clinicians living within 50 miles radius

Summary
This is a 13-week contract for an experienced Registered Nurse in a Cardio Thoracic unit requiring strong skills in EKG interpretation and medication titration. The role involves 12-hour shifts with rotating weekends and holidays, no current call requirements, and floating to general medical units. Active Illinois RN licensure and BLS certification are required; ACLS is recommended.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Minimum 1 year of telemetry experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Proficient in medication titration
