Registered Nurse - MedSurg Step-Down Unit (MSDU)

Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 4x12 hour nights (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
Weekend Schedule: Every other weekend
Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in specialty
Prior Travel Experience: Not required (first-time travelers accepted)
Local Radius Requirement: Must live within 75 miles

Unit Description

• Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), a critical care step-down unit with 26 beds
• Provides care for adult acute care patients requiring more specialized care than general med-surg units
• Patients have continuous pulse-oximetry and telemetry monitoring
• Care includes airway management, acute BIPAP support, arterial and central lines, titrated IV infusions
• Patient ratio: 1:5 to 1:7
• Multidisciplinary team approach with emphasis on vigilance and compassionate care

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in New York
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 1 year MedSurg/step-down (MSDU/IMCU) RN experience, including recent PCU (Progressive Care Unit) experience within the last year
• Certifications:

  • ACLS issued by American Heart Association
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association
  • PALS issued by American Heart Association
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Tech Cert Verification - National
• Skills:

  • Cardiac monitoring skills including interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Respiratory skills including non-invasive airway management
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Health and Compliance Requirements

Candidates must complete the following within 5 days of contract signing:

• Physical exam (within 1 year, updated annually)
• Fit mask testing (annual)
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year)
• Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
• Drug screening (within 30 days of start)
• Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination (during flu season)
• Eye exam (Snellen, within 1 year)
• COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required

Background and Verification

• 7-year criminal background check (including felony, sex offender, education verification) required within 3 months of start
• Employment verification of at least 2 past employments required
• Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start
• Additional state-specific checks as required by New York regulations

Additional Notes

• Candidates must be able to work nights and handle a patient load of 1:5 to 1:7
• First-time travel nurses are welcome
• Must be local or within a 75-mile radius of the facility
• Orientation and safety manual acknowledgment required
