Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - ICU/PCU/MS Float

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

Seeking a Registered Nurse comfortable working across ICU, PCU, and Medical-Surgical (MS) units as a whole house float. Candidates must be experienced with patient ratios of at least 1:5 and able to float 2-3 times per shift (every 4 hours as needed).

Shift Details:

  • 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM)
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
  • Holiday requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract

Charting System: EPIC experience required


Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Clinical Skills

  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, PICC line and central line care/management
  • Arterial line management and blood product administration
  • Trach management and non-invasive airway support (nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, ventilator management)
  • Chest tube management (Emerson/PleurEvac)
  • Cardiac monitoring, continuous IV sedation, emergency medications
  • Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • Minimum 2 years ICU experience from a Level 1 or Level 2 facility

Unit Patient Ratios

  • ICU: 2:1
  • PCU: 5:1
  • MS: 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1)

License Requirements

  • Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license required
  • Pending licenses accepted only if single-state from a non-compact state

Additional Requirements

  • Accepting first-time travel nurses
  • Background check covering 7 years required within 1 year of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Fit test within 1 year, updated annually
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Two clinical references required
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma required
  • Various competency exams and orientation acknowledgments required

Scheduling Notes

  • Staffing needs re-evaluated every 4 hours, requiring flexibility to float between units
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • All scheduling requests must be submitted upfront

Summary

This is a 13-week travel contract for an experienced ICU Registered Nurse with strong float skills across ICU, PCU, and Medical-Surgical units. Candidates must be comfortable with variable patient ratios and frequent floating, have EPIC charting experience, and hold required certifications and licenses. Prior travel experience is not required.

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience from a large Level 1 or Level 2 facility, with ICU experience within the last year
  • Experience working all ICU, PCU, and Medical-Surgical units as a whole house float
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • TNCC certification
  • NIHSS certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Phlebotomy experience
  • PICC line management experience
  • Central line care and management experience
  • Arterial line management experience
  • Trach management experience
  • Non-invasive airway support experience including nasal cannula, CPAP, and BiPAP
  • Ventilator management experience
  • Chest tube management experience (Emerson/PleurEvac)
  • Cardiac monitoring experience
