Description

Registered Nurse - ICU

Location: Chesapeake, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Night shifts, weekdays, every other weekend (EOW), float, and holidays within contract
  • Schedule options: 3x12 or 4x12 hour shifts (overtime billed after 48 hours on 4x12)
  • Float to Stepdown Unit; may also float to ED/MedSurg to care for ICU patients being held
  • Patient populations include neurosurgical/post-stroke, respiratory failure, renal failure, post-surgical, trauma, sepsis/MODS, heart failure, and post-cardiac cath
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:2-3

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of 3 years ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including ICU experience within the last year
  • Strong neuro ICU experience including post-neurosurgical care, neurosurgery, EVD, and stroke care
  • Experience with ventilator management, IV drip titration, conscious sedation, dysrhythmia management, and emergency management
  • Current ACLS and BLS certifications issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • Zero tolerance for any license or background hits
  • 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Federal exclusions and sanctions checks (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG) required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Fingerprinting required starting 1/1/2026 (Virginia state fingerprint background check)
  • Proof of diploma or transcript required
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year of start (PAPR not allowed)
  • Immunizations and titers required within 10 years or as specified:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (required for certain units)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (titer or declination)
    • Varicella (titer or declination)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year of start, annual TB testing required
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (or approved exemption with mask requirement)
  • COVID vaccine preferred but not required

Additional Requirements

  • Pass/fail EKG/medication competency testing at orientation (80% minimum, one attempt only)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Color blindness testing (100% passing score required)
  • Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually
  • Photo for badge (passport style, shoulders up, plain background) required before start
  • Completion of facility-specific forms and acknowledgments (e.g., safety manual, pyxis acknowledgment)
  • Proof of 2 professional references
  • Complete employment application/resume required

Notes

  • Overtime available after 48 hours on 4x12 shifts
  • Must indicate candidate preference for shift schedule
  • Candidates must comply with all local rules and documentation deadlines to avoid delays or contract cancellation

This position is ideal for experienced ICU nurses with strong neurological critical care skills who are comfortable floating to related units and meeting strict compliance and credentialing requirements.
