Job Opportunity: RN Hospice

Employment Type: Contractor
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

This position involves providing hospice nursing care in the field within the Milwaukee territory. The role is weekend-based, working Saturdays and Sundays from 8 AM to 8 PM. This is not a case management position and does not carry a caseload. Visit types include daily end-of-life visits, PRN visits for symptom management, and occasional stable routine visits.


Work Setting

  • Primarily community-based hospice care: patient homes, family homes, assisted living facilities, group homes, nursing homes, and occasionally hospice patients in hospitals.
  • Hospice patients are typically end-of-life with a life expectancy of 6 months or less.
  • Common diagnoses: approximately 40% cancer, 60% other medical conditions.

Patient Ratios

  • Field/Remote RN caseload: 13-15 patients, with 5-6 visits per 8-hour shift.
  • Inpatient hospice RN ratio: 1 nurse to 6-9 patients depending on shift.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of RN experience required.
  • Certifications: Current RN license and BLS certification.
  • Skills:
    • IV skills, chest tube maintenance/pleurex drain, catheter insertion, tube feedings
    • Triage skills, wound care, wound vac
    • Comfortable managing PIV, midline, central lines
    • Competency in end-of-life care including pain and symptom management (pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical)
    • Experience with opioids and opioid equianalgesic dosing
    • Proficient in documentation using EMR platforms
    • Independent critical thinker and problem solver with good judgment on when to seek assistance
    • Flexibility to work in both field and inpatient settings
    • Familiarity with palliative sedation (in inpatient setting)

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation tailored to individual needs and discipline.
  • Typical RN orientation includes 1 day for equipment pick-up and online training, 2 days of EMR (EPIC) training, and 3-5 precepted shifts for visit nurses.

Technology & Equipment

  • EMR systems: EPIC Hyperspace/ClinDoc or Remote Client depending on role.
  • IV pumps used include PCA pump, Alaris IV pump, Curlin pump, Joey enteral pump, and Sapphire pump depending on location.
  • Medication dispensing:
    • Inpatient facility uses Pyxis system.
    • Hospice home program medications are generally administered by family/caregivers, with RN managing IVs/injections.

Additional Information

  • Scrub color: Navy blue.
  • Parking: Ground lot parking available at inpatient facility; parking for home team members depends on patient residence location.
  • First-time travelers are accepted.
  • No prior travel experience required.
