Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical
Location: Saratoga Springs, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Provide nursing care in a Medical Surgical unit.
- Must be willing to float to other units as needed at manager’s discretion based on skillset.
- No local candidates allowed within a 50-mile radius (specific counties excluded).
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
- Minimum 2 years of acute hospital nursing experience, including at least 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience.
- Medical Surgical nursing experience within the last year.
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Certifications & Competencies
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification required for Labor and Delivery RNs.
- Successful completion of an advanced EKG/ECG competency exam within 72 hours of contract signing (90% passing score required, 100% on lethal rhythms).
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
- Color Blind Testing preferred.
- NIH Stroke Certification required for certain units; may be assigned during orientation if not on file.
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start date.
- Negative TB test (2-step PPD or Quantiferon Gold) within 1 year; chest X-ray if prior positive PPD.
- Immunization or titer proof for:
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (titer, declination, or vaccine series)
- Varicella (chickenpox)
- 10-panel drug screen within 1 year of start; must be negative.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required prior to start.
- Fit testing for N95 mask (3M 1870) required; quantitative test only accepted if done externally.
- Ishihara color deficiency test required prior to start.
- Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training as required by New York State.
Additional Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID).
- Background checks including 7-year history, sex offender registry, and federal exclusions (updated annually).
- Facility-specific documents such as photo for badge, lift assessment (typically 25 lbs), and various health questionnaires/forms to be completed during occupational health appointment or orientation.
- Completion of virtual general orientation and clinical testing modules prior to start date.
- Professional references: 2 for travel/allied/per diem acute care; 1 for per diem non-acute care (within 2 years).

- Candidates must reside outside the specified local counties to be eligible.
- The facility enforces strict testing and competency requirements, including multiple attempts allowed for EKG exam with remediation support.
- Flu vaccine exemptions require prior approval and mask-wearing in patient-facing areas if granted.
