Description

Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical/Telemetry

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Night (7 PM - 7 AM)
  • Hours: 36 hours per week guaranteed; option to pick up additional hours PRN
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Call Requirement: None
  • Float Requirement: As needed to similar medical surgical departments
  • Holiday Time Off: No holiday requests allowed; dates may be discussed with manager based on unit needs
  • Patient Diagnoses: Pneumonia, Heart Failure, GI Bleed, DKA, AMS, Sepsis
  • Night Shift Ratios: 1:5-6 (no LPN on nights)
  • Charge Nurse: Free when fully staffed (5 RNs); charge nurse takes 3 patients when fully staffed, 6 patients when staffed with 3 nurses

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years nursing experience required
  • Minimum 1 year experience in Medical Surgical (MS) nursing
  • Medical Surgical and Telemetry experience required
  • Epic electronic health record experience required
  • First-time travelers allowed

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license for Michigan
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required
  • Other certifications may be required based on unit (e.g., ACLS, PALS, TNCC) — verify with unit specifics

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search
  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • I-9 and E-Verify documentation required
  • Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (proof of at least one prior Tdap vaccine)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as applicable
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
    • Seasonal Flu vaccination or approved exemption (for candidates starting after Nov 1)
  • Fingerprinting (Michigan LARA) required within 45 days of start for certain positions; check if applicable
  • Central Registry Clearance required for pediatric and certain specialty placements (not applicable for this role)
  • References: One professional reference from a direct supervisor or manager required
  • Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps

Additional Notes

  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam must be completed within 1 year prior to assignment start with a passing score of at least 80%
  • Night shift staffing typically includes 4 RNs; charge nurse responsibilities vary based on staffing
  • No charge nurse required when fully staffed with 5 RNs
  • Holiday time off requests are generally not approved but may be discussed

  • Minimum 1 year of Telemetry experience, with Telemetry experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • CHEMO certification

  • ENPC certification
  • NIHSS certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment
