Med/Surg 2 Nurse (RN)

• Unit Beds: 24
• Minimum Years of Experience Required: 2 years
• First-time travelers accepted: Yes

Patient Types / Common Diagnoses

• Orthopedics: total hip and knee replacements, spinal surgeries
• General Med/Surg: CHF, COPD, respiratory, kidney, liver, GI issues

Patient Ratios

• Days/Eves: 1:4-5
• Nights: 1:5

Required Licenses and Certifications

• RN license required
• BLS required
• NIHSS certification preferred

Skills Required

• Peripheral IV starts
• Wound care, dressing changes, wound vacs
• Management of drains, chest tubes, stable tracheostomy
• Knowledge of patients on BiPAP/CPAP
• Experience with insulin and heparin drips

Department Support

• CNA ratio: 1:5-10 depending on shift (assist with vitals, blood glucose, IV removals)
• HUC available on days, part-time on evenings
• Charge nurse available (takes modified patient assignment)
• Phlebotomy for peripheral lab draws
• No IV/VAT team; notify House Supervisor for difficult sticks
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7
• OT/PT/ST available weekdays

Technology / Equipment

• EMR: EPIC preferred
• IV Pump: Alaris
• Medication dispensing system: Pyxis

Floating

• May float within scope of practice, primarily to Med/Surg 1, Cardiac Med/Surg 2, and ED Holding

Orientation

• New Employee Orientation (NEO)
• 1-2 twelve-hour shifts on the unit

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: every third weekend
• No on-call required
• Holiday work: up to 3 holidays during contract (including Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day)
• Request time off approval up to 7 days
• Shift times:

  • 07:00–19:00
  • 15:00–03:00
  • 19:00–07:00
  • 03:00–15:00
• Schedule cycles made in 4-6 week increments, provided 2 weeks in advance
• Scheduling accommodations made when possible
