Registered Nurse (ED Backfill) - Contract Position

• 167 beds total, 18 beds in ED

Job Description

• Emergency Department (ED) backfill role
• Patient population includes neonates through geriatrics (45% are 65 or older)
• Common patient conditions: geriatrics, chest pain, atrial fibrillation, stroke
• Transfers psych, pediatrics, and higher-level traumas as needed
• Higher acuity patients with Emergency Severity Index (ESI) Levels 2-3
• Average patient volume: 60 patients per day
• RN patient ratio: 1:3-4 (both day and night shifts)

Required Experience

• Minimum 2 years of Emergency Room (ER) nursing experience
• First-time travelers are welcome

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) preferred

Required Skills

• Peripheral IV (PIV) starts
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• Management of cardiac drips (gtts)
• Administration of vasopressors
• TPA administration preferred
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system required

Support and Resources

• Charge nurse available (may take patient load)
• Bedside telemetry monitoring without telemetry tech
• Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
• Hospitalist coverage 24/7
• Pharmacy support 24/7
• Electronic ICU (EICU) support 24/7

Equipment and Charting

• Epic EHR system (required)
• Alaris IV pumps
• Pyxis medication dispensing system

Orientation

• 2 days hospital orientation
• One shift on unit for flow training (usually day shift)

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation every other weekend
• Call not required
• Holiday expectations: 1 summer holiday and 1 winter holiday
• Time off requests can be approved with 7 days notice
