Description
Job Opportunity: PACU Registered Nurse
Location: Attleboro, Massachusetts
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Start times vary between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM.
- Average daily census: 20 patients
- Unit details: 12 rooms, 27 beds
- Patient age groups served: Infants, Pediatrics, Adolescents, Adults
- Weekend shifts: 2-3 every 6 weeks
- Occasional float to Pre-Op area
- Medication system: Omnicell
- Documentation system: Cerner
Patient Diagnoses & Services
- Preparing patients for surgery and post-op recovery
- Services include Orthopedics, Gynecology, Urology, General Surgery, Spine, Vascular, and some Ophthalmology
- Small pediatric population mainly tonsils and adenoids cases
- Pediatric emergency procedures occasionally from the ED (e.g., testicular torsion)
- Travelers typically not assigned infant patients
- No requirement to manage pediatric ventilators; such cases are transferred out immediately
Shift Details
- Staggered shifts starting from 6:00 AM (Preop Dept) and 8:00 AM onwards
- Unit closes at 7:30 PM
- Last 2 nurses stay late to recover late cases
- Night shift call from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM
- On-call weekends: 2-3 every 6 weeks
- Weeknight call every 5th or 6th night depending on unit needs
Required Certifications
- ACLS (AHA only)
- BLS (AHA only)
- PALS (AHA only)
Experience Requirements
- Acute PACU experience required
- Pediatric experience preferred; screen candidates without pediatric experience
- No explicit mention of prior travel experience requirement
Work Hours
- 36 hours for 3 shifts of 12 hours
- 48 hours for 4 shifts of 12 hours
- 40 hours for shifts less than 12 hours
Required Qualifications & Compliance
- Valid RN license in Massachusetts
- Minimum of 1 year of PACU (Post Anesthesia Care) experience, with recent experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Completion of Massachusetts CORI statewide background check
- Standard background checks including 7-year county searches, SS trace, nationwide, sex offender registry
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
- Massachusetts Nurse Aide Registry Search required for all travelers in MA
- Physical exam within 1 year prior to start
- N95 fit test within last 6 months (specific approved mask models required)
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (with medical exemption documentation if applicable)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) - no declinations accepted
- Hepatitis B (titer with numerical value required; declinations accepted)
- Varicella (no declinations accepted)
- Seasonal Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
- COVID-19 vaccine required; exemptions only with signed medical or religious documentation
- Drug screen within 30 days prior to start (minimum 9 panel)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per facility guidelines
- Annual TB questionnaire for past positives or pending TB tests
- Badge photo required (passport style, plain background)
Additional Notes
- Scrubs provided
- Candidates may be called off for up to 4 shifts during a 13-week assignment; canceled shifts must be full shift length
- Two professional references required within 3 years for travel acute care positions
This position is ideal for experienced PACU Registered Nurses comfortable with a variety of surgical specialties and patient age groups, including some pediatric cases, who are flexible with staggered shifts and weekend/on-call requirements.
