Job Opportunity: Nursing Float Pool
Employment Type: Contractor
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Float as an RN to various medical-surgical (MS) units throughout the hospital.
- Units include General Surgical, Cardiac Neuro, Oncology, Ortho, PCU, Surgical Surge Admission Holding Unit, and ED Holding.
- Provide care for a wide range of patient types including post-surgical, cardiac telemetry, oncology, neuro, and general medical patients.
- No ICU patient assignments or ventilated patients.
- First-time travelers are welcome.
Patient Types and Care Areas
- MS 1 General Surgical: SBO, hemicolectomy, thyroidectomy, prostatectomy, mastectomy, pneumonia, COVID, respiratory issues, sepsis, cellulitis, IV drug abuse, BiPAP, CPAP, nitric oxide, cardiac/neuro overflow, Cardizem drip.
- MS 2 Cardiac Neuro: Cardiac telemetry (post cath, CHF, A-fib), neuro (strokes, TIA, altered level of consciousness, dementia), general medical (sepsis, pneumonia, COPD, DKA, AKI).
- MS 3 Oncology: Neutropenic patients, various cancers, psychiatric, general medical (COPD, CHF, sepsis, DVT, AKI, dialysis).
- MS 4 Ortho: Post-surgical ortho (total joints, ORIF, external fixation), other post-surgical (GI, GU, GYN, ENT).
- 3W Cardiac Tele: Cardiac stepdown for high acuity medical, surgical, cardiac patients (post cath, 24h post open heart, SVT, A-fib, sepsis, bariatrics, CKD/HD).
- Surgical Surge Admission Holding Unit: Stable fresh surgical patients post PACU phases 1 & 2; includes ortho, GI, GYN, plastics, ENT surgeries.
- ED Holding: General medical patients awaiting MS bed.

- Night shift: 1:6

Required Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale certification
Required Skills
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required.
- Telemetry experience required.
- Strong general medical-surgical nursing skills.
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation.
- Drain management (JP drain, hemovac).
- Nasogastric tube (NGT) placement and management.
- Central line management (PICC).
- Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI).
- Dressing changes, wound care, wound vac management.
Floating Assignments
- Medical-Surgical Units (MSUs)
- Surgical Surge Overflow (including LTACH patients)
- ED Holding
- Surgical Surge Unit
- ICUs (as support, no patient assignments or medication administration outside RN scope)
- Sitter duties
Note: When floating outside primary unit, RNs will provide care within their scope and below.
Orientation
- One shift of orientation.
- Nurse Manager assigns the MS unit for orientation.
- First day includes meeting the Nurse Educator and working with a preceptor.
Scheduling
- Weekend rotation every other weekend.
- 6-week schedule provided 1-2 weeks in advance.
- Shift times:
- Day: 07:00 - 19:30
- Night: 19:00 - 07:30
- No on-call required.
- Holiday work every other holiday based on start date and department needs.
Unit Support
- Charge Nurse available (Day ratio 1:2; Night ratio 1:4-5).
- Unit Secretary (07:00 - 19:00).
- Respiratory Therapist available 24/7.
- Hospitalist available 24/7.
- Phlebotomy for peripheral draws; RNs handle central line draws.
- Centralized telemetry monitoring with telemetry tech support.
Charting Systems and Equipment
- EPIC (preferred)
- Alaris infusion pumps
- Pyxis medication dispensing system

- Scrub color: Any (no camo, denim, or logos).
- Protective, wipeable footwear required.
- No earbuds or AirPods allowed.

Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 1 year of recent Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
