Job Opportunity: PACU Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Details

  • Employment Type: Contractor
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Unit: Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
  • Location: Not specified
  • Schedule: Monday – Friday, set schedule; no weekend rotation, no on-call, no holiday expectations
  • Shift Times: Dependent on requisition
  • Orientation: New Employee Orientation plus 2 eight-hour shifts in the department

Unit and Patient Information

  • Level II Trauma Center with Level III NICU and Maternity Center, Primary Stroke Center
  • PACU consists of two areas (Main and East PACU) with combined average census of 60-80 patients per day
  • Patient types include inpatient, outpatient, and observation for both pediatric and adult populations
  • Common surgical cases: general surgery, plastics, urology, GI, bariatrics, gynecology, minor vascular, neurosurgery (spine, craniectomy), robotics, ophthalmology, orthopedics, cardiothoracic (excluding open heart), ENT, endovascular, fistulas, bronchoscopy, post-cardiac cath, post-interventional radiology/neuro IR
  • Occasionally may care for intubated patients or assist with intubation in PACU; vented/ICU-level patients typically transferred to ICU post-op

Patient Ratios

  • Pre-op: 1 nurse to 3 patients
  • Phase I Recovery: 1 nurse to 2 patients
  • Phase II Recovery: 1 nurse to 3 patients

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of recent PACU (Post Anesthesia Care) experience, including experience within the last year
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications
  • CAPA or CPAN certification
  • Experience working with pediatric patients
  • Ability to read and interpret cardiac rhythms
  • Experience with surgical specialties including Plastic Surgery, ENT Surgery, Cardiac Cath Lab, Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, and Gastroenterology
  • Experience with Epic electronic medical records system

Skills and Responsibilities

  • Provide care for a variety of surgical patients across multiple specialties
  • Float regularly between Phase I and Phase II recovery areas in both Main and East PACU units
  • Collaborate with charge nurses, management, CNAs/LPNs, hospitalists, respiratory therapists, anesthesiologists/CRNAs, and surgeons
  • Assist with tasks beyond typical CNA or LPN duties as needed
  • Use of technology including EPIC EMR, Alaris IV pumps, and Pyxis medication dispensing system

  • Scrub attire: Any solid color, professional appearance; no logos, graphics, or designs
  • Free parking available
  • No prior travel experience required but will consider first-time travelers with extensive PACU experience
  • No weekend or holiday work; no on-call shifts allowed
  • Request time off (RTO) limited to no more than 4 days approved
