Description
Job Opportunity: PACU Registered Nurse (RN)
Position Details
- Employment Type: Contractor
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Unit: Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
- Location: Green Bay, WI area (specific facility not disclosed)
- Level of Care: Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, Level III Maternity Center, Primary Stroke Center
- Unit Beds:
- Main PACU: 33 pre/post rooms, 10 Phase I PACU bays
- East PACU: 33 pre/post rooms, 17 Phase I PACU bays
- Patient Volume: Approximately 60-80 patients per day combined between Main and East PACU
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Inpatient, outpatient, and observation patients
- Pediatric and adult patients
- Surgical specialties include general surgery, plastics, urology, GI, bariatrics, gynecology, minor vascular, neurosurgery (spine, cranies), robotics, ophthalmology, orthopedics, cardiothoracic (thoracotomies/pericardial windows, no open hearts), ENT, endovascular, fistulas, bronchoscopy, post-cardiac cath, post-interventional radiology/neuro IR
- Occasionally intubated or vented patients may be present in PACU
Patient Ratios
- Pre-op: 1 nurse to 3 patients
- Phase I Recovery: 1 nurse to 2 patients
- Phase II Recovery: 1 nurse to 3 patients
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) experience, with PACU experience within the last year
- Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CAPA) or Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) certification
- Experience working with pediatric patients
- Experience in surgical specialties including plastic surgery, ENT surgery, pediatrics, cardiac cath lab, vascular surgery, orthopedics, gastroenterology, interventional radiology, and ophthalmology
- Proficiency with EPIC electronic medical records system
Skills & Responsibilities
- Proficient in reading and interpreting cardiac rhythms
- Managing cardiac drips (gtts)
- Providing discharge instructions
- Working in both Phase I and Phase II recovery areas
- Familiarity with managing art lines, TR bands, chest tubes, continuous bladder irrigation (CBI), and EPIC electronic medical records system (hard stops)
- Ability to float regularly between Phase I and Phase II recovery areas in both Main and East PACU
Support & Team
- Charge RN and management support
- CNA/LPN support primarily in pre-op and Phase II areas
- Bedside and nursing station telemetry monitoring (no telemetry tech)
- 24/7 hospitalist and respiratory therapy support
- Anesthesiologists and CRNAs available
- Surgeons on site
Technology & Equipment
- EMR: EPIC (required)
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation includes New Employee Orientation (NEO) plus 2 eight-hour shifts in the department
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, set schedule with hours dependent on requisition
- No weekend rotation, no on-call, no holiday expectations
- Time off requests limited to no more than 4 days approved

- Dress code: Solid color scrubs, professional appearance; no logos, graphics, or designs

This position is ideal for experienced PACU RNs with strong clinical skills in post-anesthesia care, comfortable managing a diverse surgical patient population, and able to work in a fast-paced, supportive environment. Prior travel experience is not required but extensive PACU experience is necessary for consideration.
