Job Opportunity: Surgical Assistant - General/Neuro Day Shift

Position Details

  • Employment Type: Contractor
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Day shift (variable start times between 5:30 AM - 7:00 AM)
  • Location: Milwaukee, WI (Level III Trauma Center, Level III NICU, Magnet Designation, Primary Stroke Center)
  • Patient Ratio: 1:1
  • Orientation: 1 to 1.5 weeks (depending on team and shift)
  • Floating: Cross-trained to General Main OR specialty and Urology center; no floating to other hospitals/sites
  • Charting Systems: EPIC, Alaris, Pyxis
  • Support on Unit: Charge Nurse, Leads, Supervisors, Manager

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Wisconsin
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of Operating Room (OR) experience within the last year
  • Neurosurgery experience
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • Surgical Assistant certification from one of the following:
    • National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
    • American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA)
    • National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA)

Required Skills & Procedures

Neuro/ENT

  • Spine surgeries: Laminectomies, ALIFs, Fusions, Discectomies
  • Cranial surgeries: Tumors, AVMs/Aneurysms (not required), VP shunts, Subdural, EVDs (no need to set up system)
  • ENT procedures: Neck dissections with flaps, Sinus surgery (Stealth Navigation), Basic ENT (Tonsils), Tympanoplasty; Cochlear (not required)
  • Navigation systems: Medtronic (Cranial & Spine), Medtronic Stealth (ENT), Stryker & Synaptive Navigation (Cranial)

Orthopedic

  • Procedures: Fractures, Anterior Hips, Total Knees, Posterior Hips, Ortho Spine (Laminectomy, ALIF, PLIF, Discectomies), Hand, Bone/Soft Tissue Sarcomas, Foot/Ankle, Total Shoulders, Arthroscopy (Shoulder, knee, ankle, wrist)
  • Equipment/Tables: Hanna Table, Jackson Table (open/flat top), Beach Chair (T-Max, Arthrex, Schlein)
  • Positioning Equipment: Stulberg Hip, Spider Arm, Hip Grip, Trimano, Arthrex Shoulder Traction, Peg Board, Arm Boards, Acufex Leg Holder
  • Specialty Equipment: Velys Robot

General Surgery

  • Breasts/Plastics, Vascular, Laparoscopic, General Oncology, Genitourinary (GU), Gynecology (GYN), Robots (XI)
  • Note: No training on robots unless strong background and commitment for more than one contract

Scheduling & On-Call

  • Weekend Rotation: Not applicable
  • Holiday Weeks: Option to work 4 (10-hour) shifts or take holiday unpaid
  • On Call:
    • 30-minute response time
    • 8-week call schedule (subject to change)
    • General/Neuro: AMs/PMs, End of shift (EOS) call slots, 1-2 weekends on call depending on specialty
    • Orthopedic: 1 day per week (Monday-Friday) from end of shift until 7:00 AM, 1 call weekend every 5 weeks (or based on number of Ortho Assistants)

Additional Information

  • Surgical scrubs provided; scrub caps allowed but must be covered by surgical bouffant
  • Free parking and shuttle service available
  • Food options on campus include Starbucks and cafeteria
  • No call rooms available

This position is ideal for experienced Surgical Assistants with a strong background in general, neuro, and orthopedic surgical procedures who are comfortable working in a high-acuity Level III Trauma Center environment.
