Job Opportunity: Surgical Room Nurse (Contract)

Position Details

• Employment Type: Contractor
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: 8-hour night shift (40 hours/week)
• Schedule:

  • Weekend rotation every 4th weekend (Saturday-Sunday)
  • Shift times include:

    • 06:45 - 15:15
    • 14:45 - 19:15
    • 22:45 - 07:15
    • 3x 12-hour shifts
    • 2x 8-hour and 2x 12-hour shifts
    • 5x 8-hour shifts
    • For RT/Hybrid roles: Monday-Thursday 8 or 10-hour shifts
  • 6-week rotating schedule provided 2-4 weeks in advance
  • No self-scheduling; assignments based on rotation needs
  • Operating room open 24/7, 365 days/year
  • Regular OR hours: Monday-Friday 07:30-23:00; after 23:00 skeleton crew for trauma/urgent cases only
  • Weekend OR hours: Saturday-Sunday 07:00-17:00; after 17:00 skeleton crew for trauma/urgent cases only
  • Holiday coverage required
  • On-call availability required with 30-minute response time; sleeping room available for on-call staff

Unit & Patient Information

• Unit Beds: 28 (including 2 hybrid rooms for cardiovascular/vascular cases)
• Average Cases per Day: Approximately 60-75
• Patient Types: Outpatient, inpatient, trauma
• Common Diagnoses/Procedures:

  • Gunshot wounds, stabbings
  • Kidney and heart transplants (no liver or lung transplants)
  • Donor cases
  • General surgery, gynecology, urology, robotics, vascular, orthopedic, neurology
  • Open heart surgeries including CABG
  • Hybrid room cases (5-10 per day): TAVR, AAA, endarterectomies, angiograms, fistula revisions (adults only)
  • Approximately 20% pediatric cases (open hearts, appendectomy, cholecystectomy)
  • Participation in organ donation cases ("Gifts of Hope")

Required Experience & Qualifications

• Minimum Experience: 3 years of acute care experience (3 years hybrid experience if applying as Hybrid IR Tech)
• First-time travelers: Accepted
• Licenses & Certifications:

  • OR/CVOR RN: BLS required
  • Surgical Tech/CVOR Surgical Tech: BLS, CST required
  • Hybrid IR Tech: BLS, ARRT required
  • Surgical Assistant: BLS, CSA required

Skills & Competencies

• OR RN: Ability to scrub and circulate; critical care experience preferred; trauma experience at Level 1-2; EPIC EMR experience required
• CVOR RN: Ability to scrub and circulate adult or pediatric open-heart cases (specific assignment clarified by manager); critical care and Level 1 trauma experience; EPIC experience required
• CST: Ability to scrub the above cases
• CVOR Tech: Ability to scrub adult or pediatric open-heart cases (assignment specified by manager)
• Hybrid IR Tech: Experience with hybrid patient types and Siemens equipment required

Orientation & Support

• Orientation:

  • Day 1: Meet educators and assistant nurse manager, gain login access, complete online modules and EPIC training
  • Days 2-3: Unit orientation
• Department Support:

  • Charge nurse (no patient assignment Monday-Friday; assists evenings and weekends)
  • Bedside monitoring by anesthesiologist
  • Resource nurse
  • Surgeons with preference cards
  • Assistant nurse manager (ANM)
  • Educators
  • Service line representatives
  • EPIC super-user

Technology & Equipment

• EMR system: EPIC
• IV pumps: Alaris
• Medication dispensing: Pyxis
