Description
Job Opportunity: Stepdown Cardiac Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Day (4 shifts of 12 hours each, 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Work in an Advanced Care Unit with typical patients including heart failure, chest pain rule out, NSTEMI, post-procedure patients, COPD exacerbation, drug/alcohol overdose and withdrawal.
- Competency required to manage IV drips such as heparin, nitroglycerin, amiodarone, Cardizem, insulin, etc.
- Targeted patient ratios: 1:5 to 1:6.
- Daily average census: 31 patients.
- Dress code: Navy blue scrubs.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Valid RN license in Ohio.
- Cardiac Stepdown experience totaling at least 1.5 years, with experience within the last year.
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience.
- Experience working with a 1:5 staffing ratio, demonstrated in work history for Stepdown or PCU.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Current ACLS certification.
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
- Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system.
Floating & Scheduling Requirements
- Travelers will be the first to float at the employer’s discretion and may float in/out of specialty clusters. Assignments will be medically appropriate or support nursing care teams on floated units.
- Floating locations may include main campus and nearby campuses within 10-15 miles.
- Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays.
- Employer reserves the right to cancel up to 2 shifts during the 13-week contract due to low census and may cancel the agreement with 2 weeks’ notice without penalty.
- Travelers are not eligible for employee incentives.
Licensure & Certifications
- Current, valid Ohio RN license with primary source verification required.
- BLS and NIH Stroke certification required.
- ACLS certification preferred.
- Must complete Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam within 1 year prior to start or pass within 72 hours of contract signing (3 attempts allowed). Failure to pass results in assignment cancellation.
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM) but are not mandatory for this position unless specified.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required.
- I-9 and E-Verify completed prior to start.
- 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months prior to start, including SSN trace, national and county checks, and sex offender registry. No open or pending cases accepted.
- Drug screening: Negative 9 or 10 panel drug screen including marijuana panel within 12 months prior to start. Random drug screening may be required during orientation.
- Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness to work and free of communicable diseases.
- Immunizations or proof of immunity required for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, and flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray required; annual TB questionnaire if past positive.
- Respiratory protection medical questionnaire and clearance required prior to orientation.
- Annual health questionnaire and candidate agreement must be completed prior to documentation due date.
- Skills checklist and medication/pharmacology competency exam must be current within 1-2 years.
- Two professional references required within 2 years of start; one must be a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse. Employment verification accepted if references are unavailable.
- Current resume/application required.
Additional Notes
- Overtime is paid after 48 hours worked.
- Request for time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer. Approval is at manager’s discretion.
- Floating assignments and shift cancellations are at employer’s discretion.
- Nurses will be fitted for N95 masks unless PAPR is needed/offered.
This position is ideal for a Stepdown/Progressive Care RN with solid experience in telemetry patient care, EPIC proficiency, and flexibility to float across nearby campuses. Prior travel experience is a plus.
