Registered Nurse, Operating Room
Location: Gardner, Massachusetts
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Provide perioperative nursing care in the operating room, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and adherence to established standards and protocols. Collaborate with surgical team members to support surgical interventions and maintain sterile environments.
Essential Functions
- Deliver patient care based on standards of practice, protocols, and policies.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions and patient goals.
- Maintain patient dignity and provide individualized care.
- Provide patient and family education tailored to learning needs and readiness.
- Collaborate on discharge planning incorporating necessary support systems.
- Delegate and supervise nursing interventions appropriately.
- Prioritize patient care and seek assistance or reassign personnel as needed.
- Document all relevant data, interventions, and patient responses accurately and timely.
- Report incidents promptly and engage in hand hygiene compliance.
- Identify and reduce risks to patient safety, including reporting errors/incidents.
- Administer medications and intravenous therapy safely according to orders and protocols.
- Assess and manage patient pain, documenting responses and notifying physicians as needed.
- Complete medication reconciliation documentation for attending physicians.
- Collaborate with surgical team members to ensure patient well-being during surgery.
- Maintain sterile fields and oversee proper handling and sterilization of supplies and instruments.
- Verify patient identity, consent forms, and operative site before surgery.
- Apply aseptic techniques and principles of body mechanics during patient positioning and transfer.
- Maintain sponge, needle, and instrument counts, notifying surgeon of results.
- Handle specimens and cultures according to policy.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Massachusetts
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum of 1 year of Operating Room (OR) nursing experience, with experience within the last year strongly preferred
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Advanced Trauma Training (ATT)
- Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)
- Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)
- Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
- Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) certification
- National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- STABLE Program certification
- Advanced Surgical Life Support (ASLS)
- National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification
- Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) certification
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)
